The quarter or Quarter Dollar with Washington is one of the most valued coins by collectors in the U.S. Do you know how much they pay sellers? Listen carefully: 830 USD. Yes, hundreds of dollars for a relatively recent coin with a large circulation.

The gold quarter sets certainly look enticing. Many of these coins, usually belonging to the 50 States Quarter program, look beautiful in gold – perhaps just about as pretty as those colorized coins you’ve probably seen, too. But that isn’t the only reason why gold quarters are worth virtually nothing over face value. We hate to be a buzzkill, but those quarters you use to avoid breaking a dollar bill could be worth way more than 25 cents. Before you spend another penny, check your wallet or coin jar for one of.

Another coin well paid by collectors is the 1849 Seated Liberty from the New Orleans Mint, with a value of $18,200. So you know, having an antique Quarter Dollar does not guarantee that it can be sold for the maximum value. The Quarter-Dollar, Half-Dollar and Dollar coins were issued in the copper 91.67% nickel 8.33% composition for general circulation and the Government issued six-coin Proof Set. A special three-coin set of 40% silver coins were also issued by the U.S. Mint in both Uncirculated and Proof.

Imagine then the quarters from other more exclusive periods! You may have a treasure at home and you still don’t know it. Of course, unless you are a collector, like antiques or already know the history of these American quarters and know where to put your eye.

But if you know nothing or very little about the subject, after reading these lines you will be able to know an estimate of their value. Also, you will be aware of the most expensive series and other valuable numismatic details. Join us until the end.

How do I recognize a Quarter Dollar?

It’s very easy to do. If you look, on the obverse side the coin shows, the profile of George Washington, the word liberty, the official motto In God We Trust and the date of manufacture. However, as usual in coin design, the image on the back has been changed frequently.

Maybe you will get lucky and find some silver quarters coins. That would be surprising, because the most common quarters no longer use that precious metal.

Now, quarters are coated with copper, nickel or two layers of cupronickel with a pure copper core. Also, some have a tabbed or milled edge.

But if you’re a collector who loves detail, note: these pieces are currently 24.26 mm long, 1.75 mm thick and weigh 5.67 grams. However, the oldest ones had nothing to do with these dimensions. In fact, they were thinner and had a much larger diameter.

History of Collectible 25 Cent Coins

The US Mint began issuing Quarter Dollars intermittently in 1796. And after periods of interruption, stability came almost half a century later, in 1831. You can imagine the number of designs that have been made since that date until today.

The first coins to be designed were Wright’s silver Quarters Dollars with draped busts between 1796 and 1807. At first, they had a small eagle, but in the last four years, this was replaced by a heraldic eagle. Then, eight years later, the series of busts with hats would begin.

Among the backs of the most striking 25-cent coins are those of the Liberty, first sitting (1838 to 1891) and then standing (1916-1930). In the middle of these two types appeared the Barber series (1892-1916).

If you like curious facts, I will tell you that there was a standing Liberty design showing a breast, although that type of coin was only made for a year.

Unfortunately, in the 1960s, the silver reserves began to run out and the Mint was forced to try alternative materials. They finally chose the copper and nickel alloy for the manufacture of the quarter, a combination that still remains, as does George Washington’s design on the obverse of the coins.

How much is a Quarter Dollar collection worth?

It depends. To determine the value of these coins we must ask ourselves several questions that will mark the path of the appraisal: What series does it belong to? What is the degree of conservation? When was it minted? What is special about that piece and how different is it from the rest?

In that sense, details matter and much in the world of numismatics. The more preserved the quarter is, for example, the higher the price sellers will demand. To make a correct estimate, it is necessary to go deeper into the series and be aware of all its characteristics.

In fact, experienced collectors know that Quarter Dollars can be worth exorbitant amounts.

An antique series like the Seated Liberty CC minted in 1872 and in good condition can cost a small fortune. Let’s say around 60 thousand dollars. Impressive, don’t you think?

That’s how we found the Barber Quarter series of 1896 and 1901, the Standing Liberty of 1918/7 and the Seated Liberty series of 1872 and 1858, all from the San Francisco Mint and with a value of over 15 thousand dollars. Another coin well paid by collectors is the 1849 Seated Liberty from the New Orleans Mint, with a value of $18,200.

So you know, having an antique Quarter Dollar does not guarantee that it can be sold for the maximum value. It is the details and characteristics of the coin that will determine how far buyers will be willing to go to have it in their collection.

The Most Valuable Quarter Dollars

The list of the most expensive 25-cent coins is headed by the Seated Liberty minted in 1872 in Carson City. With a circulation of 22,850 units, only two copies of this coin with an MS grade are preserved.

That’s why the old 25-cent coin is so highly valued by elite collectors who are willing to pay no less than $60,500 for it.

The silver Barber Quarter 1901 S is considered the hardest 25 cents to get and one of the rarest coins in the world of 20th century numismatics in the United States. Therefore, to incorporate it into a personal collection you have to pay a high price: $39,500 dollars.

A Seated Liberty 25-cent coin from 1858 and minted at the San Francisco Mint can be worth up to $21,800. And that is if it is not an MS60 graded coin, in which case the value would skyrocket, because of this coin only very few units remain.

Let’s add other gold coins: the Seated Liberty quarter of 1872 S ($17,500) or the 1852 O ($17,000) and the Barber quarter of 1896 S ($17,000). And, finally, I’ll tell you that the Standing Liberty Quarter Dollar of 1918/7 ($19,000) is super-quoted because it was first coined with the date 1917 and then 1918 without apparent cause.

Special series of collectible 25-cent coins

Although the regular issue coin is the quarter of Washington with an eagle on the back, there are special series of Quarter Dollars that will leave you amazed.

They are issued as commemorative coins in specific periods, and always under the legal approval of the American administration bodies.

Quarter Dollars from all 50 states

The 50-state Quarter Dollar series was so popular that more than 140 million Americans took to collecting the state quarters. In addition, another three million were actively involved in choosing the design of the coins.

The goal was to disseminate the history and geography of the United States to new generation collectors, and it was accomplished!

Recognizing a piece from this collection will be easy. The back of the quarters showed an allegorical design to a state, instead of the image of the eagle. While the profile of George Washington appears on the front.

The series was approved by then President Bill Clinton in 1997. However, the commemorative coins would not begin to be produced until 1999. From that date, the Mint published a quarter with a symbolic image of a different state, every 10 weeks.

It really sounds great and it is! I’ll tell you more: the project contemplates that from 2010 to 2021, five Quarter Dollars will be made for each year in reference to the most recognized National Parks in the United States.

The year 2021 will be the exception, as only one Quarter Dollar will be manufactured.

How do these quarters look? Well, as expected, the obverse kept the face of Washington. But on the backs of these Quarter Dollars appear images of parks like the Yellowstone in Wyoming, the Fort McHenry National Monument in Maryland or the Everglades in Florida. Interesting, isn’t it?

Quarter Dollars America the Beauty

This series is known as ATB or America The Beautiful quarters and consists of 56 coins in total. The idea of this program is very similar to that of the National Parks. The collection not only represents the parks, but also includes national sites from each state, federal district and territory.

I should point out that the coins were issued in the order in which these places were declared national sites.

The 25 cents coins of this series began to be minted in 2010 and the end of their issuance is expected in 2021. According to the program, five new coin designs will have to be issued each year to complete the entire project.

Of course, these coins are also very easy to recognize. On the front, there is a version of George Washington’s image and on the back, the allegorical design of the park or national site. And it goes without saying that these are very beautiful and special 25-cent coins.

1963 Quarter Value is Conditional

From brand new condition to very worn condition, is reflected in the examples. Line your quarters in a row, judge their state of preservation and assign each a 'Grade.'

As you proceed handle each coin carefully, keeping in mind, 1963 quarter value is highest for 'Uncirculated' coins.

Uncirculated: Untouched since being minted and no wear on its surfaces, a quarter in this condition is avidly sought by collectors and dealers. Admittedly few survive this nice.

Extremely Fine: The lightest of wear and abrasion begins to show in the hair and curls over Washington's ear. Minute details have disappeared and mint luster is absent from the neck and cheek. This quarter is worn, but very lightly.

Fine: Wear has begun to take its toll on this quarter. Flattened areas of wear cover Washington's hair and curls. Although the hair line along the forehead is visible.

Good: All the important details show but very flattened by wear. The tops of the letters have begun to merge into the rim. Your 1963 quarter value in this condition is worth the underlying silver bullion value.
